Solidarity messages: Pension Parity for All School Staff!

This is now closed, as the strike has been withdrawn.

A huge thank you to everyone who sent messages of solidarity, joined people on the picket lines, and supported the school secretaries and caretakers in every way they could. You are part of the reason they were so successful.

2,800 school secretaries and caretakers will be on picket lines outside their schools from 28th August 2025, fighting to get public service pensions.

For many of them, this will be their first time taking industrial action. And a lot will be doing it on their own.

There is no better group out there for this challenge, but we want to make sure they know just how much support they have. Trade unions are built on solidarity and here is your chance to send a message of support for your fellow workers!

What are they fighting for?

Most school secretaries are directly employed by the government yet denied a pension. Caretakers are also fighting for pensions alongside pay justice as well.

We have retired union members who were the heart of our schools for decades, who are now afraid to turn on the heat during winter.

And it's a completely unequal system.

Fórsa’s school secretaries successfully campaigned for a new pay agreement (2021), and the majority are now paid directly by the Department of Education. Teachers and SNAs are paid by the same employer but they have pensions, as well as paid sick and bereavement leave.

Secretaries and caretakers deserve far better than how they’re being treated by the government, specifically the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform. They're now taking this campaign all the way to Government’s door.
